Open Access for monographs

Open Access is not only an important factor for scientific journals but also for books. Especially in the humanities and social sciences publishing of monographs is very common and popular. The business models of open access books have a greater variety than in regard of Open Access journals. Mostly so-called Book Processing Charges (BPC) have to be paid by the authors so that the the book appears with Open Access. The UZH supports authors from the HSS financially up to CHF 2,000 per year. More information on the Open Access publishing fund can be found on our website.

Another approach, in which the authors don't have to pay for Open Access is the one of Knowledge Unlatched.

The funding of Open Access of books is based on a global network of libraries. Due to the acquisition of certain books this will result in its Open Access publishing. The Zurich Central Library (Zentralbibliothek Zürich) supports this initiative financially for the second time.

Directories like OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in European Networks) or DOAB (Directory of Open Access Books) list Open Access books from around the world.

A small selection of other Open Access book initiatives can be found on our website. If you have further suggestions please let us know.
